Perhaps not. Let me introduce you.
This is Puppy:
Puppy is Emily’s best friend, her “lovey” as some people call it, her absolute favorite toy, her comfort. My mother asked me why we haven’t named the stuffed dog. Why is it “puppy?” Well to be honest, when Emily was born, I was used to have a boy who named everything exactly what they are. He has a stuffed puppy identical to Emily’s except it’s blue. He named that “puppy.” His bear is “bear”, his other dog is “dog”, his seal is “seal.” The only stuffed animals that actually have names are the ones like Clifford the dog, which already come with a name. You get the picture. So I was used to that and Nathan called Emily’s puppy “puppy” from the beginning, so we just stuck with that. I’ve tried to come up with an actual name, but it’s never caught on, especially as Emily very firmly insists that it is “PUPPY.” So Puppy it is.
Puppy must go everywhere with us. Whether it is a simple trip to the grocery store, a visit to the doctor, or an adventure in the mountains. And because puppy is always with us for everything, we have lost puppy quite a few times. When Emily was about 6 months old (and already very attached to the dog, although not quite as much as now), we lost puppy. We had gone to the doctor’s and despite Nate having driven back & searched everywhere, puppy was never found. We went through a few tough days for even at that young age, Emily would not be persuaded to accept another toy as her comfort and was miserable. I had to order one from ebay because *gasp* Gund does not make the “My First Puppy” series anymore! Thank God for ebay!
The new puppy finally arrived and after a short period of hesitation, Emily accepted it & order was restored to our house. Here we are, oh about a year later, and Puppy #2 is still with us.
Emily insists on showing Puppy around outside. Apparently Puppy enjoys playing in the sand/dirt pit with her. However as soon as Puppy gets dirty, Emily comes in, very disturbed, telling me “Mommy, Puppy is dirty!” (she says “dirty” oh so cutely.) Little girl that she is, she is very concerned about dirt & does not like herself or her Puppy to be dirty. I try to clean Puppy off the best I can, but inevitably, Puppy must take a bath (aka washing machine) once a week. Puppy really needs more baths than that, but if you were to see what I go through whenever Puppy has a bathtime, you would understand. I usually try to sneak Puppy away, but more often than not, Emily realizes it soon afterwards & I have to explain that it is bathtime. So Emily sits in the bathroom, often in tears, waiting for her beloved Puppy. Puppy never makes it to the dryer. For as soon as the load of wash is done, Emily is there waiting & eagerly snatches her puppy back, giving me a rather reproachful look in the process. (Thankfully, we have a good ‘spin’ cycle on our washing machine.)
This afternoon, naptime arrived after lunch as usual and after 30 minutes of hunting for Puppy, I was forced to put Emily to bed without her beloved dog. I looked everywhere that I could think of – all the usual places and some new ones too – the cupboard, the kitchen drawer, behind the couch, even in the couch cushions. No Puppy. So naptime it was. About an hour later, Emily was still not sleeping – she was too upset to sleep without Puppy – so I got her up. Then it occurred to me that Emily had been playing with the wipes container in the living room. Sure enough, there was Puppy, who fits just about perfectly in a wipes bin.
Thank you, Lord.
That reminds me – I have finally been able to order a couple of new puppies from ebay. For a long time, all I could find was used “My First Puppies.” But this weekend, I finally found a seller who had some brand new with tags, at a great price too. So I ordered 3. I have to have a backup. And I figure if we don’t use them, I can always resell on ebay.
So, whenever I mention Emily’s Puppy in my posts, now you know who I am talking about. And yes, I mean “who” because Puppy is very much a vital and important part of our lives… 😉
This is how Emily acts when she is tired. She holds her puppy & sucks her 2 fingers at the same time. At night, she often uses Puppy as a pillow under her head.
