I’ve added a new number to my cellphone phone book.
Yes, I had to call Poison Control again tonight. Don’t worry -everything’s fine – it was more a precaution than anything.
About an hour ago, I walked into the bathroom and found an empty bottle of adult Act mouthwash on the rug. I immediately called Nathan in and inquired as to what happened. (Emily always follows Nathan in the bathroom so it was safe to assume he was there when it happened.) “Oh Emmy did it!” I asked if she drank it. “Yep, she did.” “All of it?” “Yep!”
Thankfully, I knew for sure that there was only about 2-3 oz left in the bottle, but still – it does say if you swallow more than the recommended one dosage to call Poison Control. I should also add that I keep this on the counter, but way back where Emily cannot (or so I thought) reach it even if she stands on the stool. Today, I’ve been working on laundry and there was a large pile of dirty towels and sheets on the floor nearby (my bathroom doubles as my laundry room.) Apparently Emily used these to make a pile high enough to climb up and grab the mouthwash.
So I called Poison Control – quite calmly I might add – and explained what happened. (This is the 3rd time this year I’ve had to call Poison Control with Emily.) The woman was very nice (I really do appreciate that, it makes all the difference) and upon calculating Emily’s weight and figuring how much actual fluoride was in the amount, determined that even if Emily drank the full 2-3 oz, she had not ingested a toxic amount. Thank God! While on the phone, I discovered a kitchen towel soaked in the mouthwash, so we safely concluded that Emily was perfectly fine. It didn’t make sense to me that she would drink more than a sip anyways as it’s a rather strong mouthwash (nothing like Listerine, but still it has an edge to it) and I wouldn’t think it would be appealing to a 2 year old. At the recommendation of the poison control lady, I gave Emily some extra milk to drink as that is supposed to bind with the fluoride and help further, but there’s nothing to worry about.
I had a very long day. Both kids have been out of sorts. I don’t think Nathan has listened to me or obeyed me once today. He’s been in time out more times than I can count. And Emily’s been whining and disobeying (I tell her to stop touching the tree and she looks at me and deliberately continues to touch it – that kind of thing) ALL day long.
I have one more day and then Nate is home on vacation about 10 days or so. That sounds so heavenly right now!
