That was what Nathan said while we were at the grocery store a little while ago.
“Mom, why did my butt just pop?“
Um. I stood silent for a minute, unsure of how to respond to that question – I mean what on earth did he mean?! But then it dawned on me – he had just passed some gas and to him “his butt popped.” He wanted to know why and what that was. I explained that he had just passed some gas and when we do that, we say “excuse me.” Now I know that wasn’t the first time he had tooted (as I was raised to say) or farted (as Nate calls it – I should ask his mom what she calls it though because to me “farting” is bit too crude for me & I doubt Nate was raised to say that) or passed gas (proper terminology) but of course he choose to bring the subject up quite loudly in a public place. And of course there was a sweet little old lady standing nearby who heard every word. I think her eyes nearly popped out of her head.
Yes, Nathan, your butt just “popped.” Lovely. Maybe that’s what we should call it in our house – “Oh, I just popped – excuse me!”
