I had my “growth scan” ultrasound today to check on how big little Joshua is getting.
It went very well, considering I was there by myself with both kids. Nate is traveling out of town today so he wasn’t able to make it. When the tech called us back to the room, she looked skeptical and asked “Are you here alone with the kids?” I replied (quite enthusiastically and much more confidently than I actually was) “Yep, my husband couldn’t make it, but they’ll be fine! We’ve done this before and they’ll behave!” The tech said OK and something about “We’ll see” but she was pretty nice though. I don’t blame her for wondering either, I was wondering myself!
But both kids were good. There was one chair in the room and I told them they had to share. I also bribed them with chocolate chip cookies. “You behave and you can have a cookie in the car, if you don’t behave, no cookie.” It worked. They had a couple minor squabbles over the chair, but nothing unreasonable. The ultrasound tech commented at the end that they were both very good. She said “I had my doubts, but they proved me wrong.” (Thank you, I had my doubts too and they proved me wrong as well! lol!)
But back to the ultrasound:
Joshua is currently 6 pounds 2 ounces at 33 weeks (he’s in the 80-90th percentile for 34 weeks.) This measurement can be vary up to 15 ounces either way. So he could be as little (haha) as 5 pounds 3 ounces or as much as 7 pounds. However with Emily it seemed to be pretty accurate and I think it’s fairly accurate this time too. If he keeps this up, at a weight gain of 1/2 pound a week, he will be 9 pounds when he is born. Babies usually gain 1/2-1 pound a week from here on out, so it’s quite likely he’ll be 10 pounds. Just like I was predicting. We’ll see though!
But he is looking great, very healthy, chunky, and happy. Exactly what we want.
We weren’t able to get any good photos because he is head down and already getting pretty squished in there. But that’s ok, I wasn’t expecting anything.
The tech has my due date as June 14th, which would put me at 34 weeks. However my doctor is still going by my original due date of June 21st. With my c-section being on June 16th, Joshua will be 39 weeks 2 days by my original due date or 40 weeks 2 days by the ultrasound due date.
I am just hoping we make it that far, but I think we will.
Boys tend to take longer for their lungs to fully develop so I am glad that he will be born at 39/40 weeks as that will give him plenty of time to finish “cooking.” Of course, the other side of me does wish we could have scheduled the c-section earlier because I am already feeling so big and am quite uncomfortable and in pain. My hips are quite sore and PBS is in full swing again. Oh the joys of the third trimester. But it’s all worth it to have a healthy baby. 🙂
I also had my 33 week check up with my doctor. Nothing new to report there, everything is looking good. My blood pressure is great and to my surprise, I haven’t gained that much weight.
I always tell the nurse I don’t want to know when she weighs me because it’s just too depressing. I know from past experience that I do gain a lot of weight with my babies, regardless of how careful I am of what I eat. So I quit weighing myself at home and keeping track of my weight at the doctor’s.
Well my doctor commented today “Well you finally gained a little weight!” I looked at her in complete disbelief and said “What? You mean I hadn’t been gaining?” I was so SURE I must have gained 40 pounds already. And my doctor said “No, you hadn’t gained for a few weeks. You’re up 30 pounds so far. Not bad at all. You’ll probably only gain 2-4 more pounds.”
I may actually keep my weight gain to 35 pounds! Wow.
To say that made my day a little brighter is an understatement.
I gained 60 pounds with Nathan and about 45 pounds with Emily. If I can gain 35 pounds with Joshua, well that’s fantastic. That much less to lose, right? Especially with summer right around the corner. That made me feel better. And a teeny bit less of a whale.
But yeah, no wonder I am feeling huge and everything aches so much. My kid is already the size of a full term baby and I have SIX more weeks to go!
Oh I have to share a quick “Nathan” story before I finish. When my doctor walked into the exam room today, he announced to her “Wow, you look LOVE-E-LY today!” My doctor got quite a chuckle out of that (she did look nice!) and said “Wow, you’ve got a little charmer on your hands here! You’re teaching him well. ” I said “Well that would be his father, but yep, apparently we do.”
