Joshua’s reflux is bothering him again. I tried the nurse’s trick of giving him his Prevacid first thing in the AM and waiting 1/2 hour before feeding him. It seemed to help. For about 3 days.
Now Joshua is cranky again. He cries and cries some more. He follows me around whining. He wants a bottle all the time (like he used to back in December – something about sucking on his bottle seems to soothe him.) He spits up a lot. Not as much as when he was first diagnosed back in December, but more than he has been the past few months. He spits up a couple hours after eating.
He’s been on Prevacid since December. It started working quickly & has been great. Until about a month ago. Joshua weighed about 19 pounds in December and now weighs 23. But the Prevacid dosage can’t be increased again because the doctor says he’s on the maximum dosage (15 mg) for his weight. I’ve heard that some babies will “outgrow” their reflux medication, whether it’s because of weight gain or simply because their bodies adjusted to the medication and it became less effective.
I called the doctor back this morning. They’re prescribing Zantac twice daily. I told them we tried Zantac back in December and it didn’t help. They said it’s either this or we have to go see a GI doctor.
I really don’t want to have to go the whole GI doctor route. That would mean a lot more doctor appointments and tests and who knows what else. And I really feel like Joshua is (hopefully) almost on the end of his reflux issues. Babies almost always grow out of reflux by a year – or 18 months. It’s pretty rare for it to continue past that. So to see a GI doctor now just seems unnecessary. But if our family doctor can’t help us, we’ll need to. Because Joshua (& I!) can’t keep going on like this.
So we’re going to give the Zantac one more try. I don’t have a lot of faith in it, but it’s worth a try. I guess. Joshua’s one year checkup is in 2 weeks so if it doesn’t work, we’ll be at the doctor’s anyways.
I’m just tired and discouraged again. I thought we were home free.
