I know why Joshua isn’t walking yet. It finally dawned on me.
I witnessed something very interesting yesterday. I had given Joshua a few pretzels while I was finishing up dinner. I put them on the edge of the bench in our kitchen where he likes to stand and eat a snack. I watched as he let go and stood very steadily without any hint of losing his balance and eat pretzels with both hands. He stood like that for a good minute. Until Emily came racing into the kitchen. And Joshua immediately grabbed onto the bench for dear life.
He’s cautious because he’s afraid.
He’s afraid of getting knocked over by his rambunctious older brother and sister!
Emily & Nathan love Joshua but they aren’t exactly careful with him. And Emily can be downright rough at times.
Yesterday afternoon, we were outside and Joshua was standing holding onto a plastic child’s chair. Emily came over and just snatched it away from him and he lost his balance and sat down.
I try to monitor this and I’ve become much firmer with Emily lately (I immediately sent her to time out after the chair-snatching-incident.) Sometimes she does it to be mean, but other times, I truly believe she just doesn’t think. But regardless, this is definitely a huge part of the reason why Joshua isn’t walking yet.
But speaking of that, Joshua just stood up holding onto the dog crate, let go, took a step forward, and then stood for a solid 30 seconds.
Despite his hesitation, he is making progress!
