The theme for this week’s link-up is birthdays – How do you celebrate your homeschooler’s birthday during the school day?
We usually keep it pretty simple in our home, but birthdays are important and a big deal. The birthday child gets to pick out what they want for breakfast, they might get a lighter load for school that day (of course this doesn’t apply so much to our younger children) and they get special treats. Around lunchtime, I’ll usually bake cupcakes with that child. I have so many cake mixes and frosting that I get for free with my coupons that they can literally pick from dozens of varieties in our storage area and they enjoy that. And just making something special with mom all by themselves is a treat in itself, because usually there is at least 2 children clamoring to help (Joshua’s still kind of young, but he is noticing and wanting to be ‘there’ too lately.) We celebrate birthday parties (which we still keep simple and usually just our family) on the weekends because Daddy is often not around at all during the week – hence why we make cupcakes on the child’s actual birthday. And finally, the birthday child gets to have some say (I still get the ultimate say as I never know what they will come up with!) over what we have for dinner that night too – an extra special treat in their eyes!
