Do you remember Furby? Those funny little robotic characters that “purred” and said “Do-dah!” and other gibberish, also known as “furbish.” They were all the rage back in the 90’s. I had one and loved him, although I don’t remember what happened to my little guy.
This holiday season, Hasbro is reintroducing the Furby! Only now, it has updated, more innovative features than before, but it’s still the same cute character we remember.
The Furby is one of Kmart’s Fab 15 toy list, which means it’s a popular toy for this year! They kindly sent me one to review and within a few days, Furby Taboo Teal was sitting on my doorstep, waiting for us to take him out of his box and play.
Each Furby requires 4 AA batteries and as soon as I popped that fourth battery in, our little guy started talking. I tell you, it brought back memories for sure!
When you bring a Furby home, they mostly talk in “Furbish” but these little robots actually “learn” from us and will gradually speak more English.
Our new Furby is so much more interactive than the old versions. He talks back when we speak to him and does so many fun things, like dance, sing, and laughs when we tickle him. He even purrs when happy, something that my kids thought was really funny. (Ok, I did too.)
A really cool feature with the new Furbies: they will learn from their “experiences” and their “personality” is shaped by how you interact with them. We’re still figuring out what this means ourselves and I think if we had more than one Furby, it would probably be more evident if they are different or not. But it’s neat to think about. And that’s another thing – the new Furbies will “talk” and interact with each other too!
Okay, so I said that Furby is back and better. This Furby takes interaction to a new level with a free app. Download the app onto your iPad, iPod, iPhone and then you’ll really start getting to know your Furby. (FYI: It’s not a requirement to use the app, just a fun bonus!)
You can feed Furby with the app. There’s a lot of foods that you “swipe” toward Furby. And you’ll learn what your own Furby likes/doesn’t like. Our Furby doesn’t like ‘spicy’ foods. And definitely not homework. Haha, the kids LOVED feeding Furby. Check out this video:
The app also lets us translate things that Furby is saying. It’s cool to hear Furby say something and then the app tells us exactly what Furby said. There’s also a “dictionary” type section where we can look things up too. Our Furby kept saying something and I discovered he meant:”Friend.” So sweet!
The app is neat, but we did have some issues with it not “connecting” to Furby several times. It would say “point your device at Furby” and we would, but it wouldn’t work. I don’t know if that was just us or what.
One more thing I have to mention is Furby dancing. If you put on music near Furby, it’ll dance! It’s so hilarious!
I highly recommend this Top 15 Toy from Kmart – the Furby. This toy is so much fun, the whole family will enjoy it. And it’s oh-so-cute too!
