June is National Migraine Awareness Month and today, as an Excedrin Migraine Ambassador, I’m here to share some tips for learning what triggers a migraine.
Did you know that around 35 million Americans suffer from migraines? Based on a recent study, 3 out of four migraine sufferers are women ages 18-35.
I’m one of those women who suffers from migraines. However, thanks to Excedrin Migraine and The My Migraine Triggers™ iPhone app (developed by the makers of Excedrin Migraine), I’ve learned how to track and identify the triggers that cause my migraines. And as a result, I’ve had far fewer migraines this year than I’ve had in a long time.
5 Common Migraine Triggers:
- Stress and exhaustion
- Diet – ingredients like MSG and other processed foods can factor into migraines.
- Weather changes
- Menstrual cycle (hormonal changes)
The best way to find out which of the above common triggers are factors for you is to track your symptoms with a free app, like the My Migraine Triggers iPhone app (it can also be used on iPods and iPads).
I’ve learned that migraine triggers are often connected too.
For example, when I first started tracking my triggers, I was afraid that chocolate was an issue for me. But I later learned that it wasn’t chocolate, but rather I wasn’t eating enough fresh vegetables. Since adding regular salads into my diet, I’m able to eat chocolate without any headaches.
The same goes for things like stress or exhaustion. Sometimes, you can’t avoid being tired or going through stressful times. But you can take steps to help your body, like drinking enough water and giving yourself time to relax. Even a 5 or 10 minute break where you stop, close your eyes, and think or listen to soothing music can be tremendously helpful in reducing stress.
Maybe hormones are an issue for you. I have family members who get migraines around that “time of the month.” Maybe you can’t change hormones, but you can make an effort to get extra rest during that time period, drink more water, eat healthy, etc.
And remember if and when you do get a migraine, there’s Migraine Excedrin, the #1 neurologist recommended over-the-counter medication for migraine relief.
