My dog is driving me insane. She refuses to go potty outside unless she’s outside for a long time and then she *might* finally go. I get up in the morning with the kids and Nathan or I let her outside. If I let her back inside within a normal 10 minute time frame, she pees/poops in my house. I have to leave her outside for an hour or so in the hopes that she might decide to finally go and then not go in my house. I get that she doesn’t like the snow. But it’s not like it’s not packed down enough on “trails” for her to go in. She’s so darn picky. And Nate spoils her too, so he doesn’t help. He just laughs and says “Oh yeah, she’s crazy!” I know that, but it’s not so funny when she’s messing in my house or when I’m feeling guilty because my dog is outside for an hour in the cold when the alternative is to let her and clean up a disgusting mess.
I would love to let her out for 5 minutes, have her do her business like a normal dog, and then let her back in. But I can’t do that because she goes outside and sits around on the porch and refuses to even try for a good 45 minutes or so. It’s absurd. I feel bad that she’s sitting out in 30 degree weather, but really what am I going to do? How do I get across her thick puggy skull that the faster you pee/poop, the faster you will be allowed back in the house?!
This morning, I stood on the porch and commanded her to “Hurry up, Go potty!” I made her get off the porch and she sat in the snow shivering (she never shivers when I’m not there) and trying to get back on the porch! I was so frustrated! I can’t stand outside for 20 minutes or more every morning (or for that matter EVERY time I have to put her out) telling her to go and hope she hurries up. She doesn’t listen. I don’t know what more to do.
Example: I fed Abby dinner at 5:30 pm. She ate, then I sat on the couch and pet her for a full 45 minutes while the kids played. I gave her a treat and tried to put her out. She ran away into the other room and then into her crate. I pulled her out and put her outside. She’s been sitting on the porch ever since and has refused to go use the bathroom. A full 1.5 hours from when she ate her meal. Shouldn’t she have to go by now?
I don’t know what to do. I’m so frustrated.
