Google just announced that they’re retiring Google Friend Connect for all non-blogger blogs in March 2012. That includes my blog, along with all other WordPress blogs. If you have a blogger blog, then you don’t have to worry. Yet.
I’m disappointed. I worked hard to build up my Google Friend Connect followers and now it will be going away. I remember when I had less than 20 followers and now I have over 3000! Not that PR reps seemed to care about that number, but all of us bloggers did!
Of course, Google Friend Connect wasn’t exactly reliable. It’s amazing how often that silly little box is down all over the place.
And in Google’s defense, Google Friend Connect numbers weren’t all that accurate for tracing real followers. If you think about it, once someone “follows” a blog with Google Friend Connect, there’s nothing to keep them coming back. They could follow thousands of blogs with GFC and not visit a single one again. Now a blog’s RSS feed or email subscription is a more telling sign of blog followers.
Google says we should switch to their Google + service. I haven’t used Google + much yet, as I didn’t have time to figure out one more thing. But I will figure it out and I’m moving over.
I’ve Nate has added my site Google + Button to my sidebar and it’s now an entry option for my giveaways too.
