Emily has loved horses for as long as I can remember. She’s been asking to go riding for some time now. I hesitated to get her involved because horseback riding can be pretty expensive. So we tried to get Emily interested in other sports, like karate or ballet. Nothing really stuck. She always came back to horses.
Nate and I decided that since Emily is going into first grade this fall, it was time to let her choose a sport to participate in. I asked her what she wanted to do: horseback riding or ballet. Her answer: “Horse riding DEFINITELY, Mom.”
So horses it is.
I found a nice little farm just 15 minutes away and we took Emily for her first horseback riding lesson on Saturday.
To be honest, I wondered if Emily would take one look at that big horse and say “NO WAY!”
But she’s a natural and did SO well!
The trainer, Heather, is a fantastic teacher. Emily will do very well with her. The horse, Arielle, is very sweet and gentle so that’s a huge factor too.
It seemed like no time before Emily was riding the horse completely independently.
She learned how to turn the horse left and right, how to make the horse go, and how to stop the horse.
Heather also had Emily hold her arms out as an exercise in learning to keep her balance.
While Emily was having her lesson, the boys played and fed another horse, Finnigan, some grass. Lukey loved him.
I am so proud of my Emily. She did an amazing job. We are going to bring her for lessons every two weeks and I’m excited to see how she’s going to do.
Emily didn’t stop smiling once while she was riding Arielle. That was my favorite part of the day – seeing my little girl so happy.
Have you ever gone horseback riding? I’ve always wanted to learn and I’m thinking about taking a lesson or two myself. Wouldn’t it be fun to have a mother-daughter day and go horseback riding together?
