Looking for a cute, original, homemade hostess gift for all the upcoming parties and dinners this holiday season? I know I am! Rather than showing up to a party with the traditional bottle of wine, or tin of cookies, why not make several of these adorable holiday chalkboard jars before the holiday rush.
I often have big plans for awesome hostess and teacher gifts, then when the time comes, I am swamped with cooking, present wrapping, and all that comes with the Holiday rush and I end up resorting to grabbing a bottle of wine or gift card at the last minute. Making several of these Chalkboard jars ahead of the Christmas rush is going to make gift giving stress free for me this year! I plan to fill my jars with goodies as I leave for each event this holiday season. I would love to fill the jars with homemade candy or cookies before each event. But, with a newborn baby this holiday season, I think these homemade jars will even make store-bought cookies or candy look gorgeous.
- Clear Glass Jar with Lid
- Painters Tape
- Chalkboard Paint
- Jingle Bells
Using painters tape, make a large square where you would like your chalkboard label to be.
Paint chalkboard paint inside the painters tape. I find it easiest to use a foam paint brush, rather than one with bristles. Be aware that the first coat (or several coats) will appear very see through.
Allow the paint to dry for several hours and apply a second coat of paint, applying it in a different direction than the first coat. I alternate between horizontal and vertical applications of paint. Every few hours add another coat of paint, until the chalkboard is completely opaque. I painted 6 coats on my jar.
Allow the paint to dry for at least 24 hours, then decorate your jar. I wrapped a wire around the mouth of the jar, and strung jingle bells on the wire. Then I tied a ribbon around the edge of the jar lid.
Add a message to your chalkboard, and fill it with sweets!
Ta-Da! Now you have beautiful, yet easy hostess or teacher gifts all ready for Christmas!
