I’ve got another badge to add to my recent Ambassador page – Skype! Yes, it’s been a busy couple of weeks for me!
Chances are you’ve heard of Skype before, but have you ever used it? Skype is an amazing technology that connects people with video and phone calls all across the world. Whether it’s bringing family closer together or connecting for business, Skype has so many uses.
Mother’s Day is just a couple days away; if you can’t see Mom in person, what better way to connect than through a video Skype message? Skype’s “Mom You Rock” campaign is a great way to send Mom a special video message to let her know you love her. And much more personal than the usual card in the mail too! Visit the Skype Facebook page for more details.
We live in New Hampshire, but most of our extended family lives out of state. My husband’s family is in North Carolina and my family is in Ohio and Texas. It’s expensive to travel these days, plus it’s no small feat to pack up our family of six and go, and add to that, work schedules and coordinating vacation time, and we don’t see them nearly as often as we’d like.
That’s where Skype comes in. Skype gives us the ability to connect via a live video feed so we can have a much more personal conversation. It’s especially great for the kids. For small children – especially toddlers – talking on the phone simply just doesn’t happen or it doesn’t mean much. My 1 and almost 3-year-old can’t put two and two together that they’re talking to Grandma in Texas. But they can recognize Grandma’s face on the computer when we Skype.
Using Skype has really connected our family over the distance. The kids look forward to Skype calls with Grandpa in Ohio, where they can show him their latest karate kick or favorite new toy. And when Grandma in North Carolina calls, she can see our 16 month old Luke running across the room (most likely away from it all) and listen to Emily reading her blends. When my dad built a beautiful wooden tv stand by hand, he could pick up his laptop and show it to me via Skype, instead of trying to describe it to me over the phone. Those are just a few of the instances we’ve used Skype and love it.
Skype has also been great for when Nate travels on business. He doesn’t have to go out of town often thankfully, but when he does, it’s wonderful to turn on the computer and see his face. We always try to plan a Skype call before bedtime so he can say good-night to the kids.
I haven’t used Skype for business yet, but as I’m getting more involved in blogging, it’s great to have this handy technology on hand.
Skype is one of those truly amazing advances in technology and if you haven’t tried it yet, I highly recommend you do. It’s awesome!
I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Skype. I received Skype credits to facilitate my review and a promotional item to thank me for participating.
