Last week, I shared how we received a new computer – an HP Envy h8 Desktop PC. It’s been a big help as we connect with family who live far away. We’ve also enjoyed our new computer for family time with just the six of us.
With the addition of Windows 8, the experience is now more sleek and “modern” then ever before. It brings desktop computers into the 21st century. I’ll admit; it’s taken me some time to get used to Windows 8 as it is quite different from former versions, but I’m learning and Windows 8 is very pretty!
One of the biggest parts of Windows 8 is the inclusion of apps or “Live Tiles.” Just like a smart phone or tablet, when you click on an app, it will open up. You can add apps for everything from regular stuff like email, maps, photos, internet, to games, tv, and more. It’s a great way to keep your favorites organized.
Take a peek at what my apps look like:
I circled the Netflix app because that’s one of our favorite parts. Just a couple weeks ago, I shared how much we love family TV time with Netflix, and now, our new HP Envy h8 Desktop makes it even more fun.
Here’s a screenshot of the Children & Family Movies section of Netflix. I love how bright and colorful it is, plus how many selections we can see at once. It makes it easy to discover new shows, like Mickey Mouse & The Beanstalk!
With Netflix, the kids can enjoy kid-friendly shows that I don’t have to worry about it. Nathan loves to watch science-type stuff, like MythBusters and How It’s Made, while Emily enjoys My Little Pony, Angelina Ballerina, and favorite Disney movies, like Tinkerbell. And my little boys love shows like Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Backyardigans, and Sesame Street.
Last week, the weather was gloomy, cold, and it rained a lot. While I don’t often put on Netflix for extended periods of time (I’m always sending the kids outside to play or do indoor activities), sometimes a TV day is needed. And last week, we had two TV days because I was going a little nuts with everyone cooped up inside.
Our Netflix experience is made even better on our new computer, thanks to the gorgeous 23″ HP Pavilion monitor and nice HP speakers. Even though we don’t have lots of room to sit around the computer (just a single computer chair), the kids will gather around to watch something anyways. And the screen is so big and vibrant, that it’s easy to see from farther away. Really it puts our TV (which is quite old) to shame! Haha. And the kids know it too – I’ll hear “But Mom, can’t I watch Netflix on the new COMPUTER? It’s more fun than the TV.”
Our HP Envy h8 Desktop PC reminds me of how intertwined technology is becoming. It won’t be long before computers are used regularly as TVs. And I’m totally OK with that!
I’ve personally enjoyed the Netflix app too. While my TV-time is limited, a girl’s gotta relax sometimes, right? A couple of my favorite shows are Bones, Army Wives, and Downton Abbey (who doesn’t like Downton Abbey?!) I also enjoy the occasional Netflix movie too; I recently watched October Baby; talk about a tear-jerker!
HP has definitely upgraded our family movie time!
