Play Clay Apples Perfect for Fall

If you love play dough, you’ll love this fun and soft alternative that is just a bit drier, but so soft to the touch.

This clay can be stored in an air tight container and played with again later, or you can bake it in the oven over low heat to completely solidify the shape and preserve the objects that you make forever.

In honor of fall, we decided to make these fun little play clay apples that are simple enough that even preschoolers can make them!

Kids of all ages will love making this simple play clay recipe and molding apples from the clay.

What you need to make play clay apples:

  • Red washable paint
  • Vegetable oil
  • Baking soda
  • Corn starch
  • Sticks
  • Leaves

Play Clay is a fun version of play dough that is a bit stiffer, a little crumblier, and a slightly different sensory experience, thanks to the baking soda.

Mix 1 part baking soda, 1/2 a part of corn starch, and 1/2 a part water. Add a teaspoon of vegetable oil.

Squirt some red washable paint into the mixture and mix.

If your dough isn’t coming together, you can heat it on the stove for a few minutes on low to medium heat. But, if you find it workable enough, no need to cook.

If your dough is slightly too crumbly, add a bit more water. If your dough is slightly too wet, add a bit more cornstarch.

Roll the dough into little balls and shape a bit to turn them into the more “official” apple shape.

Use a stick and a leaf to finish the apples and transform them from basic dough balls into adorable apples.

If you want to preserve the apples, bake them in the oven at about 250 degrees Fahrenheit for about an hour. Let cool before handling. For extra protection, you can coat the apples in Mod Podge or some other sealer.
