This delightful Patriotic Cupcakes recipe is easy to make and perfectly festive for any patriotic celebration. You won’t believe just how simple these cupcakes are to make – you don’t have to be an expert baker, I promise.

To make Patriotic Cupcakes, you take a regular white cake mix and color it red and blue, leaving part of it white. Bake, then frost with white frosting, and add red, white, and blue sprinkles. So easy and you have a treat that is sure to delight kids and adults alike!

What You’ll Need for Patriotic Cupcakes:

  • 1 package (18 1/4 oz) white cake mix
  • ingredients for the cake mix as listed on the box (usually eggs, water, vegetable oil)
  • red and blue food coloring (I recommend Americolor for vivid colors)
  • 1 can (16 oz) vanilla frosting or make your own
  • red, white, and blue sprinkles

ingredients for cupcakes recipe - eggs in a bowl, cake mix, oil, sprinkles, frosting

Preheat the oven to 350º. Mix the cake batter as directed on the back of the box.

Divide the batter into thirds and place in separate bowls. It will be approximately 1 and 1/3 cups in each bowl. If you’re a little off, it’s ok. It’s hard to be exact!

Add red food coloring to one bowl, blue to another, and leave the third white.

Mix them up. I always use my favorite AmeriColor food color because it makes such vivid colors with such a tiny bit.

Fill paper-lined muffin cups with about 2 tablespoons of red batter.

Now put 2 Tablespoons of white (plain) batter over the red, and lastly layer with the blue batter.

Bake for approximately 20 minutes or follow the directions on the back of the cake mix box. Remove from the oven when the cupcakes test done.

Let your Patriotic Cupcakes cool completely.

Now it’s time to frost. You can use the canned frosting for the quickest version of this recipe or mix up your own. I use my favorite buttercream frosting recipe. (Mainly because I forgot to buy frosting at the store.)

Frost the cupcakes. Decorate with the red, white, and blue sprinkles.
