Halloween Grass Heads Flower Pots

By Amanda in Activities for Kids

Halloween Grass Heads: kids will love making their own scary pot, then planting and caring for their grass. Once it's grown, they can cut it and tie the grass into fun styles! this idea now...

Do you remember growing and cutting the “hair” on your chia pet as a child?  It seems that chia pets are making a come back, and my children often point them out in the stores.  Since I don’t have a great track record keeping plants alive at our house, I wasn’t willing to spend money on chia pets.

When my husband found a leftover bag of grass seed in our garage, I decided to try making our own chia pet inspired Halloween Grass Heads.  We had the best time with this fun Halloween craft project.  Not only did we get to enjoy designing the Halloween faces on our pots, but then the kids got to plant and care for their grass until it was long enough to cut and tie into fun styles!

We planned to make a Pumpkin and a Ghost Grass Head, but when we found an extra pot, the kids decided to also add a Frankenstein Grass Head to their collection.

  • 4.5 inch pots
  • orange, white, and black paint
  • potting soil
  • grass seed

Directions:

Paint one pot orange and another white.Halloween Grass Heads: kids will love making their own scary pot, then planting and caring for their grass. Once it's grown, they can cut it and tie the grass into fun styles!

After the paint dries enough to handle the pot, use black to add ghost and pumpkin face details.  My daughter decided that the pumpkin would look like it was lit by a candle and chose to use yellow paint instead of the black I planned.Halloween Grass Heads: kids will love making their own scary pot, then planting and caring for their grass. After the pots dry, fill them with potting soil and sprinkle a generous amount of grass seed on top.  Water the pots daily.Planting

Once the grass grows several inches tall have fun styling the ‘hair.’  Cut it with scissors and use embroidery floss to tie pony tails in the grass hair.
