I quit caffeine (aka coffee) in February and I haven’t looked back. I feel healthier, sleep better, and I don’t hate mornings anymore.
Why did I quit caffeine? Because really, what’s the harm in a cup of coffee every morning?
Since I learned I have hypothyroidism a year ago, I’ve been actively working to improve my health with a healthy lifestyle. I’ve also had ongoing adrenal fatigue and caffeine makes it worse. So with that and my decision to give up sugar because I was really fed up with feeling so sick and tired all the time, I quit caffeine.
I never thought I could give up coffee (yes even decaf, though that was a few weeks later), but I did. In February no less when I’ve always needed my coffee the most with our long winters and my tenancies toward hibernation.
How did I do it? It was thanks to one simple trick – honey lemon water.
Honey lemon water has many health benefits and it’s so easy and inexpensive to make that, even if you don’t plan to quit or even decrease your caffeine consumption, it’s still a great way to improve your health.
Benefits of Honey Lemon Water:*
Lemons are natural vitamin power fruits with great health benefit potential. Here’s a few:
Aids Digestion:
Lemon is great for improving digestion and can help if you suffer from gas, bloating, acid reflux, constipation, indigestion, or other stomach ailments.
It also helps with bile production – aka liver and gallbladder function.
I’ve suffered from gallstones in the past (I was advised by an ER doctor to have my gallbladder removed 6 years ago just after Joshua was born, but I started eating healthier and avoided surgery.) Still I know I’m still susceptible to gallbladder issues so a lemon water detox is exactly what I need to stay in tip-top shape.
Healthier Skin:
Lemon has great antioxidant properties and can help boost your skin’s collagen production naturally.
Bladder Health:
Lemon is a natural diuretic so it helps cleanse the urinary tract which in turn may help avoid infections.
Hydration:
Lemon is very hydrating so it’s a great refresher for the morning or any time of the day when you need a boost.
Natural Energy:
Raw honey is a natural energy booster because it’s completely raw and a good source of nutrients. When you combine this powerhouse gift from nature with lemon, you have an awesome combination. Here’s a great link that explains more about why honey is so beneficial and can potentially help with weight loss!
I’ve lost 12 pounds since I started drinking honey lemon water and cut out sugar from my diet. Honey Lemon water isn’t a magic pill, but when regularly consumed along with a healthy diet and lifestyle, it can help.
Immune System boost:
Honey is a natural antibacterial (see my all-natural immune system boost) so it’s awesome for your immune system. Plus lemon is a great source of Vitamin C.
Detox:
Honey lemon water helps detox your body by flushing toxins out. It also stimulates liver function which is one of the primary ways your body detoxes.
You need all the systems in your body to work properly in order to feel your best.
My story:
I’ve been drinking honey lemon water daily for almost 5 months now and I’ve seen a huge improvement in my health.
It helped me quit caffeine. I went from drinking at least 2 large cups of coffee a morning (and feeling jittery afterwards, but I needed the caffeine to wake up!) to not needing any caffeine at all in the morning.
I usually enjoy one mug of black or green tea in the morning, but the past month, I often forget to drink it because I don’t need it anymore!
The only difference is that I’ve been drinking honey lemon water every morning.
From Grumpy to Happy:
I have never been a morning person – I’ve always been grumpy and woken up very slowly. Like not until noon. When you’re a mom with four kids and a to do list a mile long, that just doesn’t work.
But that’s changed. I don’t cringe when my alarm goes off anymore. I wake up and get going.
Honey Lemon water has also helped with my sugar cravings. I don’t crave sugar anymore, but I’ve found that making an extra mug of honey lemon water helps with carb cravings too.
My immune system isn’t the greatest after years of low thyroid function, but I am improving. While I picked up two colds since drinking honey lemon water every day, they were nowhere near as severe as other times and I was better within a day or two.
I’ve also noticed an improvement with my digestion. I’ve dealt with constipation off and on for the past couple years (sorry TMI – and yes, it’s a symptom of thyroid issues) but that’s improved drastically since I began drinking honey lemon water. I’ve also had no issues with gas, bloating, or indigestion, something I occasionally experienced before.
I used to experience occasional break outs on my face, but I haven’t had any for the past 3 months. I’m thrilled because as a 32 year old adult, it’s no fun walking around with a big ol’ pimple in the middle of my forehead! Now I contribute this advantage to cutting out sugar, but I have no doubt the honey lemon water helped too.
How to Make Honey Lemon Water:
Ingredients:
(affiliate links below)
freshly boiled water (cooled)
raw honey
1/2 fresh organic lemon
A Few Notes:
I recommend using spring water (no chlorine, fluoride, or other things you find in city water) for the best results. Still if that’s not feasible, don’t let it stop you from using regular tap water – you’ll still experience great benefits.
You must use raw unfiltered honey –not the processed honey on the grocery store shelf.
This is the brand I use: Raw Honey
You should also use real lemons, not lemon juice in a bottle It’s just not the same when it’s not fresh. In a pinch, you can use lemon juice, but you probably won’t get the same benefits, plus there’s more additives that you really don’t want. (I did that for a few days when my kitchen was torn apart for our remodel. Sometimes you just gotta make it work for you!)
I use this citrus press from Pampered Chef (not an affiliate link, but it’s my sister’s site so if you purchase from there, you’ll help her out!) and it’s super quick and easy to use.
Instructions:
Add about a tablespoon of raw honey (I always estimate – it’s no fun trying to make honey fit into those little teaspoons) to your mug.
Squeeze your lemon juice in and stir.
I usually fill my mug half 3/4 full with hot water, then add a few ice cubes (I get filtered ice cubes from our refrigerator) to quickly cool it.
(Note: A reader commented that hot water will destroy the nutrients of the honey. So try using warm water instead and just stir the honey into your lemon water.)
Drink it down!
I’ve found it works best if you enjoy your honey lemon water when you first wake up on an empty stomach.
I challenge you to try honey lemon water each morning and see what happens. You may not even realize the benefits as your body gradually perks up, but they’ll be there!
And if you’re not quite ready to quit caffeine? Try honey lemon water for the other benefits. You may find yourself needing less coffee without even trying!

I did a coffee detox a few years ago and felt amazing. But I slowly started drinking coffee again and now I’m back to 2 cups in the morning just to wake up. This has inspired me to re-detox! This honey lemon water sounds amazing! Thank you for sharing your story!

I am not sure I’d survive without coffee. This definitely does look like a drink I’d enjoy though.

We cut out all caffeine a year or so ago except for the occasional glass of sweet tea. Once we got through the withdrawal symptoms we noticed a huge difference!

I love lemon water and it is my number 1 drink of choice. It is so good with ice too but I have never tried it with honey.
Saulin says
Hi, hot water will destroy the nutrient in the honey. Is better to use warm water and plastic spoon to stir to melt it. This is what the honey seller told me
Erika says
I didn’t know that – thanks, Saulin. It does make sense – it’s the same reason why raw is better because you have more nutrients.
Amy says
Sounds great! I am planning to quit caffeine soon and dread the withdrawal. What’s the point of boiling the water? Maybe I missed it, but I don’t understand the purpose of that step. Thanks for your help! ~Amy

How much water do you use? I’m trying to estimate how much of each ingredient I should use if I want to make a pitcher, thanks!
