Are you ready for Rio?!? The 2016 Summer Olympics are around the corner, and my girls and I can’t wait! I’m probably the least athletic person out there, so I’m living vicariously through the men and women competing.
Although I won’t be winning any medals for swimming or gymnastics, I have a chance for gold when it comes to having fun with my kids. In preparation for the upcoming Olympic games, we made Salt Dough Olympic Medals. I’ll show you how to make them today!
How to Make Salt Dough Olympic Medals
What You’ll Need for Salt Dough Olympic Medals:
- 1 cup salt
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup luke-warm water
- Rolling pin
- Circle cookie cutter or glass
- Star cookie cutter (optional)
- Plastic straw
or glass

Mix the salt and flour in large bowl.
Slowly add water to the mix.
Knead until well mixed and doughy.
Then roll out the dough, like you would with sugar cookies.
Use a circle cookie cutter or rim of a glass to make circles.
If you’d like, you can add a star to your salt dough medals. To do this, press a star cookie cutter halfway through, being careful not to completely cut out the star. (You might need to help younger children with this part.)
Bake in a 200 degree oven for 2-3 hours (time depends on the thickness of your medals).
I’ve read that you can also microwave salt dough for 3 minutes initially, and then 10 second intervals until dry.
Because of the length of time it takes to dry out the salt dough, we made this a two day project.
Once we had prepared our salt dough Olympic medals, we were ready to decorate them.
Salt Dough Olympic Medal Decorating Supplies

Paint your medals with gold acrylic paint. You could also paint using silver or bronze!
Because I’m a fan of anything glittery, we added a little sparkle before leaving our medals out to dry. Once dry, we strung ribbon through the holes.
Now all that’s left is to sit back & wait for our nation’s athletes to take the world stage. We’ll be cheering them on, wearing our salt dough Olympic medals of our own.
