Are your kids dinosaur fans? My kids can’t get enough of dinosaurs. I’ve wanted to let them try a dinosaur dig for a while, but I never seem to find any dinosaur dig kits in the store when I go. But, what I did have was Jello and dinosaurs.

I created this fun dinosaur fossil dig using Jello for my dinosaur lovers. The kids loved digging out their very own dinosaur “fossils.” If you have dinosaur bone toys, this activity is even more fun!

This activity does take some time to set up, so do the preparation stage the day before you want your kids to try the activity.

What you’ll need to make the Jello fossil dig:

  • 2 boxes of Jello (we used yellow like amber)
  • Plastic dinosaurs
  • Shallow pan

Mix the jello according to the package directions. We made it a bit stiffer by reducing the amount of cold water we added. This made it a little harder to pull out the dinosaurs.

Add dinosaurs to the Jello while it is still wet.

Let the mixture sit in the refrigerator overnight.

The next day, pull out the container and arm your kids with spoons.

Let them dig out the dinosaurs.

At first, my kids tried to preserve the dinosaur fossils left in the Jello, but after a while, they just had fun squishing the Jello between their fingers and didn’t care as much about creating fossil imprints.

Let your kids play this activity in the bathtub or outside for easier clean-up. This activity is quite messy, but it makes a fun sensory experience for little dino lovers. Kids will have a blast digging the dinosaurs out of the Jello and eating the remains.

After the activity is over, give your dinos a good rinse with warm water and they will be as good as new!
