Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than with a monstrously adorable card box? This DIY monster Valentine card box is as fun to make as it is to use!

I don’t know about you all, but we love Valentine’s Day at our house! My kids are too young for the real romance of the holiday, but they still love getting paper valentines from friends and classmates.

I came up with this fun Valentine card box for them to store all the cards they receive this year.

How to make a valentine card box pin this idea now...

With just a tissue box, construction paper, and a few other basic supplies, you can create a cute and quirky box perfect for collecting all those sweet Valentine cards and treats. It’s a super simple craft project that’s great for kids to make and use at home or a classroom Valentine’s Day party.

And, because I love a good pun, I opted to make a monster Valentine box with the theme of “love bites.” My kids thought it was pretty funny and loved making little monsters of their own to display.

Supplies

Ready to whip up your own Valentine’s card box? Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Square tissue paper box
  • Pink, white & red colored paper
  • Googly eyes
  • Chenille stem
  • 2 white pom poms
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

How to Make a Valentine Card Box

First, you’ll need to cover the sides of the box with construction paper. Obviously, we went with the classic pink and red, but you can use whatever colors you like. We papered the sides in pink and the top and bottom of the box in red.

Next, it’s time to make the mouth pop with all those teeth.

Use the tissue box hole to trace out the shape on a piece of paper, then cut out the hole for the mouth. Add teeth using construction paper.

Once you glue the paper to the box, it’ll look like your monster has a scary mouth full of teeth!

Now, onto the fun part: decorating!

The kids decorated their monster by whim. Some fun things to add include stickers, hearts, glitter, and googly eyes.

Want to kick it up a notch? Add ears by using pipe cleaners and pom poms! We attached the pom pom ears with hot glue, as it was much easier that way. It would have taken forever for the glue to dry if we had used any other kind of glue.

Don’t forget to make sure your child’s name is on the box so everyone knows who the treats belong to. Of course, I had to write “love bites” on each side of the box. 😉

When the glue dried, my kids couldn’t wait to start using their box for Valentines cards. They instantly started composing messages to each other. It was really sweet!

Variations

There are plenty of variations on this simple Valentine card box design! Here are a few ways to make it your own:

  • Change up colors – use blue and green, orange and yellow, or any other colors your kiddo loves to make it his or her own.
  • Make it look more like a bug – instead of a monster, you can easily make this into a bug with antennae instead of ears. You can add feet to the box using markers, too!
  • Use patterned paper – instead of plain paper you can easily grab cute scrapbook paper to give this craft more of an upscale look.
  • Add arms or legs – use additional pipe cleaners to make arms and legs, and cut the hands and feel out of construction paper.

What can I put in the box?

Valentine’s Day card boxes aren’t just for collecting cards—they can hold all kinds of fun surprises that kids will love! Adding a mix of creative and playful goodies makes the celebration even more special.

Whether you’re prepping for a classroom exchange or planning a Valentine’s party, here are some fantastic ideas to include in the card boxes:

  • Valentine’s Day Cards: The classic tradition! Kids will love swapping heartfelt or funny messages with their friends. Or, make the cards a bit more fun by using this free printable You’re A-Maze-ing cards I whipped up!
  • Games: I love passing out these free printable I Spy valentines and these free printable tic tack toe sheets!
  • Stickers: Look for Valentine-themed stickers featuring hearts, flowers, or fun characters to add some festive flair.
  • Mini Crayons or Markers: Perfect for encouraging creativity, these small art supplies are a hit with kids of all ages.
  • Playdough or Clay: Tiny containers of colorful dough make a great sensory gift that kids can enjoy playing with after the party. Plus, you can even make your own DIY playdough to gift – it’s SO easy.
  • Temporary Tattoos: Fun and easy to use, temporary tattoos with Valentine designs are always a crowd-pleaser.

With these creative ideas, kids can fill their monster Valentine’s Day card boxes with all sorts of treasures, making the holiday extra fun and memorable!

I hope you give this fun Valentine card box a try – we had a lot of fun making it, and I know you will, too!
