Let’s be honest: cleaning the toilet is pretty much everyone’s least favorite job. And who can blame us? This chore stinks (literally, unfortunately). That’s why I am SO excited to share my favorite cleaning hack with you all: toilet bombs!
These cleaning bombs are made with natural ingredients and have a neat fizzing action that makes this typically gross chore more palatable.
Not only do they look cute (what other toilet cleaner can make that claim?!), but they’re fun to watch while they fizz in the toilet bowl!
Let’s just say that my kids have never been so “helpful” in wanting to help me clean the bathroom before!
What are toilet bombs?
You’ve likely heard of bath bombs before, and this is the same concept—although, thankfully, you don’t soak in these. 😉
Instead of providing a relaxing atmosphere to bathe in, these little cleaners do the hard work of scrubbing your toilet for you!
Toilet bombs are also sometimes called toilet fizzes or fizzies, thanks to the signature fizzing action. This comes from the reaction caused when baking soda within the toilet bomb is met with white vinegar.
Think of that classic volcano science experiment, then imagine all that action working against the grime in your toilet!
Supplies
Now, let’s talk about how to whip up a batch of these toilet bombs!
Supplies Needed:
- 1 cup baking soda
- 1/2 cup citric acid (I used the whole 4oz container of Now Foods Citric Acid)
- 10 drops peppermint essential oil
- 5 drops lavender essential oil
- 5 drops lemon essential oil
- 5 drops melaleuca essential oil (or other disinfecting essential oils or blends like Tea Tree, Thieves, or Armor!)
- Distilled white vinegar
- Silicone mold ( I used this flower-shaped silicone mold)
- Jar for storage
- Spray bottle
Essential Oils to Use
The uses of essential oils in this DIY are twofold. Firstly, they can help mask the stink that toilets tend to have (ick!). Secondly, they also can bring some powerful cleaning properties to your toilet bombs! Here are the oils I recommend:
Peppermint Oil
Peppermint oil will bring a minty, fresh clean to your toilet bowl. Plus, it has antiseptic properties to boot.
Lavender Oil
Despite its gentle and calming scent, lavender oil has a powerful punch of disinfecting properties. I also love the scent – it feels like I’m getting a 2-for-1 special of cleaning my home + a dash of aromatherapy.
Lemon Oil
One of the most popular essential oils for disinfecting is lemon oil. This scent also happens to be a natural deodorizer, which is always welcome in the bathroom.
Disinfecting Essential Oil (Tea Tree, Thieves, or Armor)
Lastly, these toilet bombs call for one last disinfecting oil. I often use tea tree oil, but many people prefer a blend like Thieves or Armor.
How to Make Toilet Bombs
You’ll find that this process is very similar to whipping up a batch of DIY bath bombs!
In a large bowl, stir together baking soda and citric acid until well combined.
Next, add the essential oils and stir to mix thoroughly. I recommend using a metal whisk as it does a great job of breaking apart the drops of oil throughout the mixture.
Place vinegar in a spray bottle and spritz the baking soda mixture lightly. You will see a small fizzing action, but it will quickly stop.
TIP: You do not want to soak it, or you will cause the fizzing reaction (baking soda + vinegar reaction) to occur too much, and it won’t be effective for cleaning.
Spritz and stir, then repeat. Continue doing this until it is just barely misted enough so that it sticks together when squeezed but not dripping. You want it to be moldable like wet sand – but just barely wet!
Here is the fun part where you can get the kids involved and pretend you are on the beach making your own sand castles! 🙂
Take a handful of the mixture and firmly press it into each of the 12 silicone molds. You may see them “grow” a bit from the vinegar + baking soda reaction as it dries.
I just kept pushing them firmly into the mold to hold their shape. It will take a couple of hours for your toilet cleaner fizzies to fully dry. I let them sit overnight before I popped them out of the molds.
Pop them out of the molds and store them in a mason jar or similar container. That’s how you make all-natural DIY toilet cleaner fizzies!
How to Use Toilet Fizzies
Simply drop one of the fizzies into the toilet, let it fizz for a couple minutes, then scrub your toilet clean. You’ll love how clean your toilet is without any chemicals either!!
Don’t be surprised if your kids suddenly want to help you clean! They’ll love the fizzing action with this DIY toilet cleaner.
Storage
I highly recommend keeping these toilet fizzes in a mason jar or other airtight container.
The most important thing to keep in mind is they must be kept away from moisture! It sounds dramatic, but even a drop of water will set off that fizz reaction and ruin the entire batch. Make sure your hands are dry when you reach in, or better yet, use tongs or something else to grab them!
When stored properly, they will keep for about 3-6 months (if they last that long!)
I hope you find this makes cleaning the toilet a tiny bit more enjoyable! 🙂 Happy cleaning!

What a great idea. I don’t like using harsh chemicals and the toilet is one area I haven’t found a way around that, but this is a great solution. I am going to pin it and make it with the kids when school is out.

I am trying to get away from buying store cleaners with plastic containers so these look interesting. What size should the toilet cleaner fizzles be to clean a toilet?
