Looking for a way to pamper and soothe your lips this winter? This is it! The winter season can bring about dry, chapped lips. Do them (and yourself) a big favor and soothe them with this easy DIY peppermint lip balm.

Plus, if you’re looking for an easy stocking stuffer, this is a fantastic option! This pampering lip balm is easy to make in bulk, and you only need 3 ingredients and about 10 minutes to do it. Yes, truly!

The perfect homemade gift

This DIY peppermint chapstick is one of those simple homemade recipes that I return to year after year.

You can make a large batch all at once, so you’ll have plenty of DIY peppermint lip balms to give away this holiday season. You never know when you’ll need one, so don’t forget to stash a couple aside for yourself too!

It’s become somewhat of a tradition in my home to whip up a batch or two of these each winter season. Then, we set them aside as gifts. We keep a small bowl of these on the table if we entertain guests and encourage them to grab one or two to take home.

I also use these as a fun stocking stuffer when we do Christmas with our extended family. People say they look forward to it all year – the cooling peppermint combined with the soothing beeswax is a winning combination.

Of course, this mint lip balm makes a great teacher’s gift too. Pair this with some peppermint lip scrub for a cute gift set she’ll love!

Ingredients

Remember, you only need a few supplies to make this simple DIY! Here’s what you’ll need to have on hand for this peppermint lip balm:

  • 1 oz of beeswax – Beeswax is the perfect lip balm base, as it is both soothing and has antibacterial properties to protect your lips. Plus, it is very easy to work with and inexpensive too.
  • 3 heaping Tbsp coconut oil – Similarly, coconut oil is ultra-moisturizing and also antibacterial.
  • 10-15 drops of peppermint essential oil – Peppermint is a “hot” oil that packs a powerful punch. This means a little goes a long way! It’s worth noting that this oil can be irritating to the skin if not diluted properly, so be cautious as you add the drops!
  • Containers to hold your lip balm – You can use whatever container you like. I tend to use these little plastic containers, but this year, I may switch the peppermint chapstick over to the more traditional lip balm tubes. Tin containers work well, too!

How to make peppermint lip balm

Let’s talk about how to make this simple, soothing lip balm. Remember, you can easily double or triple the batch!

Begin by adding the beeswax and coconut oil into a saucepan. Heat on low on your stove top until both are completely melted.

Then pour your melted mixture into a pourable container with a spout. I love my glass Pyrex measuring cup for this!

Add 10-15 drops of peppermint essential oil to your mixture and stir it in. You can vary this a bit.

As it is, this minty lip balm isn’t very tingly on your lips. You just feel a bit when you first put it on.

Add 5 more if you really want yours to have a stronger peppermint scent, and have the lip balm tingle a bit more on your lips when you apply it.

Your lip balm is done! See how easy?

Now just pour it into your waiting containers. If you have really small containers or are nervous about pouring without making a mess, you could get some glass droppers, but it’s really not that messy.

You could tie a ribbon around a candy peppermint and wrap that around the lip balm as a cute gift-wrapping idea!

I’ll be making extra of this homemade peppermint lip balm to give as gifts to my daughters’ teachers and bus driver and to friends at my mom’s group this year!

Of course, I’ll stick one or two in my own purse as well.

FAQs

How many lip balms will this make?

The final number of finished lip balms will depend largely on the size of the container you use. I usually get around 6-7, but when I make larger tins it can be 3-4.

What else can I make with peppermint?

Since you have the peppermint oil out and ready, why not make a few more DIYs?

I often like to gift a completely natural bath and body product gift basket. I include Peppermint Goat’s Milk Bar Soap and Homemade Foot Cream with Peppermint along with this peppermint lip balm for the perfect trio!

This is very temperature sensitive. You could add more coconut oil to make it softer, but coconut oils melting temp is 74F. So the beeswax makes it so it won’t melt at just a bit warmer than room temp. If you just stick it in your pocket, it will get much softer with your body heat.

Could I melt the beeswax and oil in the microwave instead of on the stove?

TYes, you can melt the beeswax and coconut oil in the microwave. Just use 30 seconds increments at a time , stirring often to mix the two ingredients together. Make sure your wax and coconut oil isn’t really hot when you add the Peppermint essential oil, it will make the peppermint oil lose some of the healing properties. Pour into your containers of your choice.

I”m not sure what Aquafor is – other than a lotion brand. Tell me more. 🙂

Could I use jojoba oil instead of coconut oil? I’ve never worked with jojoba oil but I’d like to try and was just wondering the difference.

I personally have not tried jojoba oil either. Is the melting point of it low like coconut oil so it will go on your lips smoothly? Give it a try and come back and let us know!

Could this be changed up with lemon EO or lavender EO for spring/summer? Or would the amount need to be changed?

yes – you can use any oil you want! The amount can probably be the same. The more oils you add, the stronger the scent – so just keep that in mind.

Is there anything you can use besides beeswax that works like beeswax?

You could also use cocoa butter – both the cocoa butter and beeswax harden up the lip balm. Beeswax is the go to first though b/c it doesnt’ have scent. Cocoa butter though will turn this into “chocolate peppermint” – which isn’t a bad thing if you want to try! 🙂

Ally, it won’t work quite the same. I wouldn’t substitute in this case.

You shouldnt use soy candle wax unless you know what addatives they use in the production of the wax. There is cosmetic grade soy wax which is safe to use. Some soy candle waxes contain stearic acid which can be an animal product and therefore making it not vegan.

I’ve had batches last for 3-4 months before they start going ‘off.’ So I’d say 2-4 months depending on the season. (Summer will likely go ‘bad’ faster than the cooler winter months.)
