The best essential oils for immune support
There are a handful of essential oils that have been researched and proven to have immune-boosting properties. I like to mix them together to create my own DIY immunity blend!
The oils I include are:
- Lemon – Known for its antiseptic and antibacterial properties, lemon oil can help support the body’s natural defenses against illness. It also smells fantastic and always lifts my mood!
- Oregano – This potent oil has strong antimicrobial properties that may help fight off infections and support the immune system, thanks in part to powerful compounds like carvacrol and terpinene.
- Thyme – This powerful oil has been found to have antiviral properties that can help protect against viral infections. I have found this oil is excellent for helping me feel better when I have respiratory issues.
- Rosemary – With its antibacterial properties, rosemary oil can help boost the immune system and fight off infection. It also happens to smell amazing!
- Ginger – This spicy oil has been found to have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that can help support the immune system.
Don’t have these oils on hand? No problem! You can also buy a fantastic blend that’s premade with all those awesome oils (plus some!). I highly recommend this Immune Strength blend – it smells incredible and has worked well for us!
Diffusing essential oils for immunity
I’ll start with our diffuser blend because this one is so easy. Using a diffuser is one of my favorite ways to get those healing oil properties into my home.
Items you’ll need:
- Essential oils – DIY immune-boosting essential oils blend from above:
- OR this Immune Support blend from Rocky Mountain Oils (it’s our favorite and contains even more beneficial essential oils).
- Diffuser – Any essential oil diffuser is fine; you don’t need an expensive name-brand one. This is my favorite diffuser. This is our big diffuser for our living room; it diffuses for a really long time.
How to diffuse essential oils for immunity:
Add water to your diffuser’s fill line, then add 1 drop of each essential oil to your diffuser for a total of 5 drops. If you have a small diffuser in a small room, choose 3 of the essential oils listed above and add 1 drop of each for a total of 3 drops.
I know that may not seem like very much, but essential oils are the very definition of “a little goes a long way.” Using too much oil at once is not only wasteful, but it can even cause problems.
Immune support essential oil roll-on recipe
The other way I recommend using essential oils for immunity is to make a roller. During cold and flu season, I’ll make a bunch of these to have at home and to give out as gifts.
Safety Note – This roller blend should not be used on children under the age of 2. Additionally, using rosemary topically (aka on the skin) is not recommended for children under 10. If you want to make this for kids younger than 10, leave out the rosemary.
Items you’ll need:
- 10ml Glass roll-on bottle
- Carrier oil, like fractionated coconut oil
- Essential oils from my DIY Immune support blend:
- Lemon essential oil
- Oregano essential oil
- Thyme essential oil
- Rosemary essential oil (only use for ages 10 and up)
- Ginger essential oil
- OR this Immune Support blend from Rocky Mountain Oils (it’s our favorite and contains even more beneficial essential oils).
How to make this essential oil roller recipe:
Add 10 drops total of the above immune-boosting essential oils to your roller bottle. If you are making your own blend, you will want 2 drops of each oil.
If you are using the ready-made Immune Support blend, then add 10 drops in total.
Fill the rest of the roller bottle with a carrier oil. While there are many carrier oils, my favorite is fractionated coconut oil. This will help dilute your essential oil blend so it can be used safely.
After your bottle is full, you then take the steel roller ball and push that into the glass bottle. Be sure it is pushed all the way in and fits snugly in order for the roll-on bottle to work correctly and not leak.
How to use this immune support roll-on
Shake your roller bottle before using it each time. It will help to mix up the oils for even dilution.
I like to apply this blend to the bottom of my feet. I also use it on the back of my neck. For my children, I will roll it on the back of their neck (not near faces), or the bottom of their feet too.
I use this on a weekly basis to help support my immune system, and if I know I’ve been exposed to something, I use it more often, like once or twice a day. You may also apply 2-3x a day if you feel under the weather.
I was so glad when I started using roller bottles because they are much more convenient to use than the traditional drip essential oil bottles!
This immune system booster essential oil blend is not the only tool to have on hand during this cold & flu season. That’s a great recipe. I myself use the Young Living essential oils and noticed that the “Thieves” oil blend from Young Living has the exact same single oils of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary essential oils in it.

Hi Gina, you can use virgin olive oil, however, it has a stronger scent and may not smell as nice with essential oils compared to options like fractionated coconut oil.
