If you are looking for a completely guilt-free dessert that satisfies all your chocolate cravings, I’ve got the perfect solution for you: avocado chocolate mousse. Yes, this chocolate mousse recipe is filled with good-for-you fats and mounds of chocolate flavor. You will quite literally eat this one by the spoonful!
This chocolate mousse recipe is going to blow your mind. Its sweet, creamy, chocolaty goodness rivals any chocolate dessert. The best part? It takes less than 5 minutes to whip up (!!!).
I actually made this recipe by accident one day when I was experimenting with a new smoothie bowl recipe. It may have been the best mistake I ever made! Chocolate and avocado are a match made in heaven.
Benefits of Avocado
Okay, I know some of you may be wrinkling your nose and wondering how this combination could possibly taste good, but I promise you that it does! Avocado gives this mousse the most incredible creamy flavor while also keeping you satisfied and full for longer.
This recipe makes four servings of avocado chocolate mousse. A single serving will get you so many incredible avocado benefits, including:
- 49% of your daily vitamin K, which is essential for bone health.
- 30% of your daily folate, which helps red blood cell development and skin growth. (If this sounds familiar, it’s because folate is crucial to have during pregnancy!)
- 25% of your vitamin C, and let’s be honest, we could all use a little bit of vitamin C right now!
- Potassium, Vitamins B5 + B6, and many more minerals that are essential for our bodies.
Equipment
Okay, now that you know why you absolutely have to make this chocolate mousse, let’s talk about how to actually do it. Luckily, making this dessert couldn’t be easier. If you can push a food processor button, you can make this mousse!
Here’s what you’ll want to have on hand to make this creamy avocado chocolate mousse:
- Food processor
- Measuring cups
- Measuring spoons
- Spatula for scraping
- Small serving bowls or ramekins
Ingredients
- Ripe avocados
- Cacao powder or cocoa powder
- Honey
- Vanilla extract
- Almond milk
- Fresh fruit as a topping – This is optional but highly recommended – I like strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries on mine!
How to Make Avocado Chocolate Mousse
First, remove the seed and peel from the avocado. Then, measure out all the other ingredients and add them all into the food processor. By the way, if you are looking for a good food processor, I love mine! This is similar to the one we have.
Next, hit the pulse button a few times to get the mixture started. Then, process until everything comes together and is nice and smooth…
Some of the mixture will get stuck on the sides of the bowl, so make sure to scrape the sides with a spatula. We want to make sure that that bit of the avocado chocolate mousse is smooth, too.
Then, process for a few more seconds until your mousse is smooth and creamy with no chunks. Trust me – the last thing you want when enjoying your chocolate mousse is to end up with a chunk of avocado in your spoon!
Spoon into small bowls and serve.
Unlike other mousse recipes, this one does not need to be chilled prior to serving – you can eat it right away!
Variations to Try
One of the best things about this healthy chocolate mousse is how versatile it is! Here are a few ways you can customize the recipe to suit your taste or dietary needs:
- Mint Chocolate Mousse – Add a drop or two of peppermint extract for a refreshing, minty twist. Perfect for the holidays or any time you want a cool, chocolatey treat.
- Mocha Chocolate Mousse – Mix in a teaspoon of instant coffee powder or brewed espresso to create a rich mocha flavor. It’s a great option for coffee lovers.
- Orange Chocolate Mousse – Stir in a tablespoon of freshly grated orange zest to the mixture for a bright, citrusy note that pairs beautifully with the chocolate.
- Nutty Chocolate Mousse – Blend in a tablespoon of almond or peanut butter for a nutty flavor. Top with crushed nuts for extra crunch.
- Vegan Sweeteners – Swap the honey for maple syrup or agave nectar to make this recipe fully vegan. It’s just as sweet and delicious!
- Spicy Kick – Sprinkle in a pinch of cayenne pepper or cinnamon for a spicy or warming kick. It’s a fun way to give your dessert some unexpected flair.
- Protein Boost – Add a scoop of unflavored or chocolate protein powder to turn this mousse into a protein-packed treat. This is a great post-workout dessert!
Feel free to experiment with these ideas to make this recipe your own. You’ll be surprised by how a small change can completely transform the flavor!
FAQs
Does this taste like avocado?
NOPE! One of the best things about this recipe is you only taste delicious, creamy chocolate!
I served this to my husband and kids, and even though at least 2 of them don’t like the “secret” ingredient in this guilt-free chocolate mousse, they all loved this dessert.
What can I use instead of almond milk?
While I love almond milk in this recipe, you can actually use any milk you have on hand. Coconut milk, oat milk, or regular dairy milk all work well in this recipe.
How long can I store this mousse?
Store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. Keep in mind that the mousse may darken slightly over time due to the avocado, but it will still taste great.

Hi. I tried this recipe and love it but not sweet enough when i add the cocoa powder. Should I sweeten it more? Any ideas?
Erika says
Yes, you can add more sweetener. You can add a little more honey or try another option, like stevia. A couple drops of stevia (or more depending on how sweet you want it) should sweeten it nicely without changing the texture.
Malia says
Wow this recipe looks amazing! Just to confirm, I don’t have to refrigerate this mousse do I?
Thanks!
Erika says
You should refrigerate it.
Jess says
Is it possible to freeze this and have it as a soft serve?

I’m not sure how well the avocado will freeze, but it wouldn’t hurt to try.

Yum! One of my fave desserts!!! Excited to try this out 🙂 One question: can I use any type of milk? Thanks xx
Erika says
Yes, you can use any milk. It will probably alter the flavor, especially if you use something like coconut milk, but it shouldn’t affect the texture. Enjoy!
Freefika says
Can we use a sweetener like erythritol in place of honey?
Erika says
Yes, absolutely.
Lindsay England says
I just made this for dessert tonight while my boyfriend was playing poker. I snuck him some and he was shocked when I told him it was avocado! I needed a little bit more almond milk than the recipe called for, but this was amazing. Topped it with blueberries and unsweetened coconut.

Yay, glad you liked it! Love the toppings!
Simone Garner says
Hi Erika,
I would love to try make this – can I make the night before serving and store in fridge?
Thanks so much!
Erika says
Hi Simone, this one is best made right before you eat it because it uses avocado. I have stored leftovers in the fridge and it doesn’t taste quite as good.
Marie says
I don’t have a food processor. Can I use an imulsifier?
Erika says
I don’t see why not.
Rachel says
Very nice and easy to balance the ingredients per taste and preference!
