A loofah sponge is a wonderful way to gently and naturally exfoliate skin. Did you know you can combine a loofah sponge into a homemade soap bar?
It’s actually quite easy to make melt-and-pour loofah soap. Today, I’ll show you the easy recipe with a simple step-by-step tutorial and you’ll be off to make your own batch in no time!
This loofah soap recipe uses a glycerin soap base combined with essential oils, soap colorant, and micah sparkles that results in a wonderful smelling homemade soap that exfoliates and cleans.
You can make 10 bars in one batch, so you can keep a few for yourself and use the rest as an easy DIY homemade gift idea!
How to Make Melt-and-Pour Loofah Soap:
What You’ll Need:
- 4″ Natural Loofah Exfoliating Body Sponge (4 of these make 24 bars of soap)
- Clear Glycerin Soap Base – 2 lbs
- Yellow soap color
- Gold Mica Powder
- 2 cup glass measuring cup
- 6 Cavity Round Silicone Mold
- Lemon Essential Oil – Rocky Mountain Oils | Eden’s Garden
- Grapefruit Essential Oil – Rocky Mountain Oils | Eden’s Garden
- Lime Essential Oil – Rocky Mountain Oils | Eden’s Garden
- Bergamot Essential Oil – Rocky Mountain Oils | Eden’s Garden
This is enough to make 10 bars of soap. If you don’t need that many, you can adjust the recipe accordingly.
The first thing you need to do is get a sharp knife (I love my Miracle Blade for this!) and slice the loofah sponge into about 1-inch thick pieces.
One thing to note is that the loofah sponges came in a pack of 4, and they were squished down to be as flat as they could be for shipping purposes. You will need to get your loofah sponges wet first, and then they will open up into their round shape.
Then grab your round silicone soap mold and place one slice of loofah sponge into each.
Next, you’ll want to cut your glycerin soap base into about 1-inch cubes and place them into your glass measuring cup. About half of the soap will fit into a 2 cup glass measuring cup, so you will have to make this in two different batches.
When the soap is cubed and in the measuring cup, put it in the microwave for one minute.
Take it out and stir it, and then microwave the soap again for 30 seconds. Continue doing this a couple of more times until the soap is fully melted. Once your soap is liquified, its time to add your essential oils.
Which essential oils are best for this loofah soap recipe?
Well, the combinations are endless, but I chose citrus essential oils because they are cheery and remind me of springtime. We all need to wake up from winter hibernation, and citrus essential oils can be mood and energy boosters.

For this particular loofah soap recipe, add about 15 drops each of Bergamot, Lemon, Lime, and Grapefruit essential oils. That will offer a subtle, but amazing smell in your DIY loofah soap.
Feel free to adjust the essential oil quantities to use less or more to your preference.
Then add 5 drops of yellow soap colorant.
Add just a 1/4 of a teaspoon of gold mica powder. A little of that powder goes a long way! Stir the soap, essential oils, soap colorant, and mica powder until it is all well blended.
Now its time to pour your liquid soap into the mold containing your loofah sponges.
The loofah sponges might try and float to the top like a couple of mine did. If that happens, I recommend placing a tablespoon on the edge of the soap to hold them down while they cool.
Let your soap cool for at least an hour before you pop it out of the mold. Then you are ready to use your DIY loofah soap!
Why would you want a soap with loofah sponge in it?
Loofah is used to shed off dry skin. Loofah is also known to rid feet from callus and cracking of the skin. If you use this soap on your feet and follow up with this Homemade Cracked Heel Cream, your feet will get a real treat and your callouses will be greatly reduced!
I hope you try this melt-and-pour loofah soap recipe and use it to pamper yourself.
These also make absolutely wonderful homemade gifts! Mother’s Day isn’t too far away to be making these now and storing them away to bless your mom with. You could also share this loofah soap tutorial with a friend, or host a soap making party at your house for a fun ladies night out!
Which Essential Oil Brand is Best?
For the best results, you will want to choose a high-quality essential oil brand that is 100% pure and offers third-party testing for quality control. Read this post for more info on how to choose essential oils that work for you and your family (beyond the brand.)
My favorite essential oil company is Rocky Mountain Oils, followed by Eden’s Garden, and Ancient Apothecary by Dr. Axe.
